Today, we are in WEEK 7

This is the Information Competency week. Come into the Library and go through the CD ROM that is loaded in the ERA. Work through the tutorials given you, especially the CSU Information Competence tutorial. Did you know that information Competency is now a graduation requirement at most CSUs? It is also known as Information Literacy. You need to know what it is. By taking this course, and working through the tutorials, you will become an information literate student.

I will be available at the Library this week on Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening. Please come in and get some help, if you need it. I will be out of town this weekend Friday through Monday. TEST 1, your first quiz, will be open from Sunday March 29 to Sunday April 11, no extensions. Please look through the test and come in next week if you have questions. The college will be closed for Spring Break April 4-11. (I will be checking my email during the break sometimes.) You have an extra week to take the test because of the break so try to finish it early and have a good Spring Break, too.

Check in at the Discussion Area. Many students have not posted their opinions yet. This is an important aspect of electronic communication along with email and Instant Messaging and Chat. All of these are being utilized in work situations and is expected of employees today, so here's your chance to practice!

I can't stress enough the importance of catching up with your assignments and getting to Assignment 7 before you take the test next week. Only a couple of students have posted their Week 6 Assignment on a Famous Person. Please work on your assignments and submit them soon.

Textbook and WEEK SIX

Several students have not purchased the text book yet. Please purchase it this week because the bookstore will be returning books that are not purchased by Friday. However, remember that the college is closed for classes on Friday, March 19 for a faculty and staff in-service day. You will need the text book, not just to keep up with the Readings, but to do the TESTS. The first test will be opened in April. Check the calendar regularly to see where you are in relation to where you should be, please. My suggestion is that you finish your first seven assignments before the Spring Break. Then, after you finish your test and submit it you can spend the rest of the month working on your Research Paper. Be sure you get approval for your topic before you start on the paper. The last day to drop with a W is the end of April. I will have to drop anyone who does not take the test. You will have one week to take the test and it is open book, so be sure you give yourself time.

We are now in Week 6. Work on your Famous Person assignment. Remember to include your cited URLs. You don't need a very long paper but you do need to start including your researched websites. See the EVC Library webpage for a handout on citation, MLA style Please send in your assignments in .doc form. I cannot open .wpd. Thank you.

Don't forget to check in at the Discussion area and post your opinions. Please post your initial discussion in the Subit Assignment box, too, so that I can post a grade. Interact with students who post, this is a discussion area and not a bulletin board. Give your opinion and check out what the other students think.

Assignments

Several things are happening now~
1) Some students are still sending me their assignments via email within WebCt or at the college email. Please stop doing this because I cannot post a grade from email. I will only be able to post the grade at the end of the course. If you have already sent it please post a copy now in your assignment box.

2)Everyone should be loaded into the course now so please check in and send me an email within WebCT to confirm that you are in. Thank you.

3) For clarification on Assignment 4: Search Engines click on the archives on the right in this blog and go to September 2003. Here is a new comparison of search engines given by Search Engine Watch in their awards last month. 4th Annual Search Engine Awards

4) Please post your discussion in the Assignments box, too. This will enable the grading in WebCT. Post it in both areas. Your post in the Discussion area can be responded to by your classmates.

5) Come in if you still need help! I am in the library on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings. I will be working this Saturday 10-2 and I am also available other times. Don't stumble along till its too late to get help. I look forward to meeting you in person.
