Tairua

We drove out through the Bombay Hills--honestly, that's what they're called--to Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsula. Walked to the beach via a grassy knoll in the shadow of a volcanic cone, where people actually live and helicopter in, I was told. Then we drove further out to Hot Water Beach.Moo tried to dig down to the hot water with her $4 hired spade but it was high tide and we were able to find it just by doing the Twist into the sand in the water. It was hot!!!Joy and Bill, in hot water! On to Cathedral Cove, nominated as the best beach in the world. Kiwis are into WORLD firsts, just like Americans. OK, nobody told us we had to hike 45 minutes through the bush--read large Kauri trees, pohutkawa trees with red flowers and very tall ferns--but we did, there and back. You would, too. This is why:Cove 4 Cove 3 Cove 2 Cathedral Cove 1 Eric

Later that night we went out to see if we could find a kiwi at the reserve, inspite of scoffers (members of our own family!) who said we would never see one. We think we saw three, little yellow eyes lighted by the moon. Right, Jemma?
We also had to see a real pukeko bird at Western Springs, a park very much like Vondelpark in Amsterdam. pukeko Us all
