Homework from WEEK 1?

Thank you to Kathleen, Connie, Hugo, Arthur, Carisa, Simon, Andre, Catia, Thyngoc, Anh-Tu, Jose, Nat-Chi and Lameshia for successfully submitting their autobiographies in the Assignment Submissions box. Where are the rest of you? If you cannot take this class for some reason please email me and I will delete your names from the WebCT list. If you plan on continuing, PLEASE submit your WEEK 1 homework ASAP. If you are still having trouble using the homework submission in the software, come into the library and go through it with me again. Send me an email if you need to come at another time than my posted hours. I am at Evergreen on T, W, Th and some Fridays. I can make an appointment with you but don't get too far behind.

For those of you who are keeping up with the assignments and are already on Assignment 4 and starting Assignment 5, great! Keep up the good work. Send me any questions you have on the assignments. Do your readings, too, because they are important on the tests and homework. Check out the textbook site. If you continue to keep up and do good work you will get a good grade in this class.

I look forward to hearing from all of you, soon.

Assignment 4 clarification

Re: Questions on Assignment 4

Please read all the information on Search Engines given both in the textbook and from the links. The Kansas City Public Library Introduction to Search Engines is at http://www.kclibrary.org/resources/search/intro.cfm

In the Search Engine Watch website of latest information and news about search engines check the Nielson rating of search engines at http://www.searchenginewatch.com/reports/article.php/2156451

Use the top choices for your comparison. These are the main Search Engines: Google, Alltheweb, Yahoo, MSN. Secondary, but also usable are AOL, Askjeeves, Hotbot, Altavista and the meta search engine Ixquick. Plug these into your address line with a dot com i.e. Google.com or http://www.google.com Do not use the popular meta search engines that use paid listings in their results. Examples of these not to use are dogpile, excite, metacrawler, webcrawler, mamma, overture and search.com.

ASSIGNMENT 4:

Do your own comparison of five (5) search engines repeating the same search in 5 search engines. Make 3 different searches and submit.
First: Choose 3 questions (make them up yourself) i.e. 1. How do I control diabetes? 2. Who is the top ranked world cup woman soccer player? 3. How to choose a dog? Etc. Do not use these questions, use your own questions.

Second: choose 5 Search Engines from the list above.

Third: Ask your #1 question in all 5 Search Engines. Compare your results. Write one paragraph on your results. Do not give me the numbers only. Tell me which you think is best and why i.e. I asked ... to these 5 search engines...and this search engine gave me the best results because...and these other search engines did not because....

Fourth: Repeat 3 times, once for each question.

Any further questions please email me or come into the library for help.

Some of you are still sending me your autobiographies only via the webct email. I cannot post a grade through email. Assignments MUST be submitted through the Assignment Submission box the first time. Only re-writes can be sent via email. Thanks.

The college email is down because of viruses again this weekend. Please resend any email on Monday.

This picture of me was taken in Australia a couple of years ago. I can now post pictures on my blog so please send me pictures of yourselves, but make sure it is web ready and low in pixels and not huge. I can reduce the size on my computer but it has to pass through my email first. Please send, with name attached, to my college email addressafter Wednesday. Don't forget! Thanks.

Hello Class! More students have sent me their biographies but not all of you yet. Hurry up, its already the 4th week. The semester goes very fast and then you're free again. Think about the semester break and then you will get all your material in, ok?

Please don't send files as .wps because I cannot open them in WebCT. Send them as .doc files. Thanks.

SJECC District servers are down because of a massive virus attack. We hope they will be back up on Monday. This effects my college email.

Comments on your assignments are mandated by the WebCT software. Therefore, you may see short comments from me such as "thanks", "OK" or "good" sometimes. However, you should check these comments as I may critique your submission.

This week has been very busy for me because of the Orientations. I have had 31 students attend the Orientations to my class. If any of you still have problems understanding the software for WebCT, please come into the library when I am at the Reference Desk on Tuesdays 9-12 or Wednesdays 5-9 PM. This Tuesday I have an English class coming in from 9:30-10:30.

The site for your assignment 3 on the history of the book comes up nicely. Please write 250 words on your chosen topic. MSWord now has a count capability on the top left hand corner of the document. Click recount to view the number of words before you submit your assignment.

I hope you are enjoying the class! Let me know if you have any problems.

Thank you to those students who have sent me their biographies. We have students from Hong Kong and Cambodia and those who have from 2-5 children and work full time, too. Take care to pace yourselves. I am always amazed at how much my students can accomplish. I have graded Assignment 1 for Connie, Arthur, Jose and LaMeshia. Comments are written into the grade so click on it. Let me know if you have problems finding the comments.

I hope to hear from the rest of you this week. Be sure to write more than one paragraph (but not a whole book!). Most of our lives could fill a book, but save that for your English classes. Please share your biographies with at least two other students via email in WebCT. Get to know the students in the class so you don't feel all alone in your virtual classroom.

ASSIGNMENT 2: BROWSERS Write at least 4 items about Internet Explorer. Study the tutorial at the University of Albany. You can substitute the LYNX text-only web browser for Netscape or you can read about Netscape Navigator 7.1 from the Netscape network. You can also download Netscape from this site.

Check the Discussion List area and post your choice for our next governor. Do some research and don't pick someone that has already been written about. Give us some variety. You can vote for whomever you want when you go to the polls. If you cannot vote, please still enter the discussion. The results will effect us all.

Coming up, WEEK 3! Don't get left behind! :-)

Students can now use Project Shine as a volunteer project instead of writing the Research Paper for this class. Please talk to me first and get the paperwork signed before you start. Training times will be Saturday Sept. 13 9 AM-12 noon or Tuesday Sept 16 6-9 PM. Check the website. The program involves students teaching seniors to become citizens.

Tuesday, September 09, 2003

Today we had twelve students attend the Orientation. This was great! You are ahead of the class and can begin your assignments. I have given Admissions and Records the names for the adds and they should be processed ASAP. Check back on Thursday to see if your name is uploaded and try to enter the class. Thank you to John and Balbir for submitting your pre-assessment survey to me today! Good for you! The one thing that is most important in an online class is to keep up with the material. Don't forget about it ,and then wake up in the middle of the semester, because you will be way behind! My next Orientation is tomorrow, Wedesday at 6 PM. If you have questions, remember that I will be available in the library from 5 PM. I have another class (Biology 64) coming in at 8 PM tomorrow. I hope you all have fun and enjoy the class. :-)

Orientations will be held on Tuesday 9/9 10 AM-12 NOON and Tuesday 9/16 at the same time. Orientations will also be given on Wednesdays 9/10 and 9/17 from 6 PM-8 PM.
